Assist Canada in preparing for the future.
Canada’s young people still suffer from greater unemployment rates than those of other age groups.
It’s not because they don’t have the passion, the ambition, or the energy; the main challenges our kids have to overcome are inexperience and a lack of necessary skills.
The Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program breaks the “no experience, no job” or “no job, no experience” circle.
Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program
As a mentor in the Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program, you give young Canadians an opportunity to obtain experience and build skills that will prepare them for the employment market. Their future is our future.
Let’s give them the experience they need to prepare for it. Sponsored by the Government of Canada and implemented in conjunction with the YMCA since 2000, the Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program places interns in host federal government departments, agencies, and Crown businesses.

Internships are open to young individuals aged 15 to 30, who are no longer in school full-time and who are currently unemployed or underemployed.
The program offers three categories of internships: one for people who have not graduated from high school; one for high-school graduates; and one for college and university graduates. Interns are not replacement workers, nor are they intended to fill specific positions.
The focus is on widely based, flexible developmental assignments that will provide interns with the self-confidence and personal discipline they will need to be successfully employed, or self-employed, at the end of the program.
Contributing to the Cause
As the country’s largest employer, the federal government is doing its share to help Canada’s youth polish their résumés and build the employment skills they need. Opportunities are being made available for young people all around the country in a wide variety of subjects and disciplines. You can do your part by becoming a mentor.
Anyone—at any level—can be a mentor. It means sharing your skills and knowledge with an intern so that he or she can get important work experience and grow as a professional.
There’s just one requirement: to be willing to function as a coach and guide, and to be a source of moral support. If you’re wondering what you get out of being a mentor, just ask someone who’s participated.
They’ll tell you about the dynamism young people have brought to the workplace, about their enthusiasm, their dedication, and their commitment to getting the most out of the opportunity they were given.
And they’ll talk about the satisfaction they receive from making a difference in the lives of young people.
Share your experience. The government of Canada is committed to helping our kids integrate into the employment market.
Thanks to the Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program, young Canadians can benefit from exceptional internships and the experience of inspiring mentors. You can be one of these mentors.
